What are your rights if you suffer with IC in the UK?

As a person with Interstitial Cystitis, you have a journey of facing scepticism and some obstacles will require you to be aware of your rights. It is important to keep these in mind in situations resolving around your invisible illness, because often you will not have any rights acknowledged until you learn and mention them. 


The most significant law within the UK in the case of Interstitial Cystitis when constituting a disability, is the Equality Act 2010. Keep in mind that it is always good practice to try and follow the companies full process before pursuing with an outside source like an ombudsman or furthermore a Tribunal. In fact the majority of the time, you will be required to show that you have followed the full procedure through to the end and if this is not the case, you will have to express your reasons why it was not followed or within the policy timing.  


A disability as defined by the act, is a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long term effect on your ability to do normal daily activities. The Equality Act confirms that legally, there is a duty to make reasonable adjustments if you are placed at a substantial disadvantage because of your disability; in comparison to those without it. The Equality Act 2010 protects you from discrimination based on having or being associated with a disability, and the act simply must be adhered to by ALL of these services:

  • Employers

  • Businesses and organisations which provide goods or services like banks, shops and utility companies

  • Health and care providers like hospitals and care homes

  • Someone you rent or buy a property from like housing associations and estate agents

  • Schools, colleges and other education providers

  • Transport services like buses, trains and taxis

  • Public bodies like government departments and local authorities.
